Abrahadabra: The Tetractys of the Decad

While the Abrahadabra grid appears to have a very unique relationship to the Tree of Life, it has a lot more tricks up its sleeve than this alone. One of its most dynamic mysteries surrounds the Tetractys of the Decad as expounded by Pythagoras and also dealt with separately by western Qabalists fairly extensively. Pythagoras was so enamored with this glyph that he coined it "Logos", or the manifestation of God on earth. It is typically expressed as an equilateral triangle comprised of 10 points with one at the apex descending to four at the base, and is said to constitute the governing dynamic behind spatial dimension itself. In the glyph above we find the same configuration expressed as 10 equilateral triangles. I sometimes refer to these as the "Secret Chiefs", since it would be easy to miss them if you weren't specifically looking for them to begin with, and indeed, to the best of my knowledge, I am the first to draw attention to their property in relation to the Abrahadabra grid.

To briefly recap, the Abrahadabra grid is an 11-tiered equilateral triangle comprised of 66 points with one point at apex descending to 11 at the base to which the eleven letters of Abrahadabra correspond. This yields 55 ascending and 45 descending equilateral triangles internally for a grand total of 100 triangles in all. In the system of the Kamea's (or magickal squares), this corresponds to the Kamea of Earth, being a 10 x 10 square in which all vertical, horizontal and diagonal columns add to the same number. It is not possible to duplicate this specific mathematical symmetry in triangles but there are other ways of calculating their "magickal" properties as depicted by various numerical and geometrical alignments, which I will not go into right at this time.

What is of particular interest to us here in this discussion is that the conventional Tree of Life also consists of 10 descending "sephira", or numbers, usually represented as points to which dimension is then assigned for the purpose of easy observation. It is important to bear in mind that the sephira are actually numerical coordinates of no particular dimension to begin with and, in truth, the Sepher Yetzirah never really does address their specific geometrical alignments, but rather this comes later in time as others attempted to map these points in greater detail. For the longest time, the Tree of Life was an uncontested base 10 system and there were no other sephira to be considered. Over time there emerged a great deal of controversy regarding an eleventh coordinate called "Daath" (Knowledge), positioned at the throat area on the glyph above and generally considered to represent a prominent division in macrocosm itself,  dividing the Supernals from the worlds below the "abyss". The Abrahadabra grid appears to take this issue one step further, suggesting a twelfth sephira to be considered at the very apex of the triangle which cannot effectively be disregarded as non-existent, since too much raw physical power is converging on this point and is, by definition, both stemming from and returning to it in the end. Either of these new sephira are "on the map", yet no number has ever been assigned to Daath and the debate rages on as to its actual physical nature. What has been assigned to Daath "unofficially" is the property of a "dash", which is interesting in the sense that this constitutes a numerical syntax, without which the practical use of numbers would be altogether impossible, having the general effect of making Daath responsible for "not-numbers" in practical application.

It probably needs to be said that Qabala is no longer the sole province of Hebrew scholars and has not been for several hundred years at this point. It has been adapted to other uses by people outside of the Judaic religion and there are both pros and cons to this that need to be carefully evaluated by those individuals who may elect to utilize its mechanisms. Hermetic Alchemy, in general, is not very much interested in historically authentic interpretations of Qabalistic canons so much as it is focused on the continuous development of experimentally verifiable principles of elemental universe on its own terms. Sometimes this will require breaking with traditional views which are more often than not hopelessly deadlocked in irresolvable argumentation counter-productive to natural evolutionary progressions.

So far as conventional Qabala can take us, we are still left with 10 essential sephira within the traditional Tree of Life arrangement and it would be adequate enough that Abrahadabra should come along to consolidate the sephira with greater efficiency than ever before, but something significantly more dynamic than this appears to be occurring. Abrahadabra is an independent anatomical standard that would seem to be making a resurgence from an unexpected quarter. In Abrahadabra, we are not looking so much at a revision of Qabalistic assertions as we are looking at a whole new body of data, which traditional Qabala just happens to synchronize with at intervals. This is not a simple reshuffling of the same old sephira so much as it is the assertion of an entirely unique arrangement of sephira operating on a much more complex body of underlying assumptions...one apparently rooted in the synergistic dynamism of "layered" metaphysical constructs of which the Tree of Life is just one recognizable dimension, the Tetractys yet another, the I Ching a third and so on down the line. The Abrahadabra grid adapts flawlessly to the Tree of Life of its own accord just as it appears to do with the Tetractys of the Decad but is neither the one system or the other in itself. Rather it is something altogether unforeseen and unexpected. In many ways I can only stand and gawk at what it seems to be proposing...like some sort of master key that may open any logically constructed door. As it happens, I am just reckless enough to press on with testing the logical limits of an esoteric enginery that, so far as I can determine, appears to know no such thing as physical limitation.

The Tetractys points, chambers, or houses, then, constitute another another "layer" within the Abrahadabra system itself...but what do they correspond to? If they do not immediately correspond to the Tree of Life but rather exist parallel to its property, what "property" are they defining?  One of the ways to approach this is to examine the numbers themselves (which I will do a little later on) and another way is to scrutinize the geometry. One of the things we see going on with the Chiefs is that they would seem to be asserting the same essential "sephira" operating at a much higher level of energy efficiency. It is as though Abrahadabra itself is able to "stand down" in the form of the Tree of Life and "pick up" in the form of the Tetractys. This is reminiscent of the Egyptian "eye in the triangle" form which was not exclusively assigned to Horus as is commonly misunderstood. Rather all the godforms in that pantheon were understood to have their respective "eye" form, so that there was an "eye of Haathoor", an "eye of Kephra", an "eye of  Set" and so on. The eye form depicts the "collected" inertia of any particular god form, still materially connected but at one-remove in that instance. My best guess up to this point is that something very similar is taking place in Abrahadabra itself, and that the Tetractys displays the Tree of Life collected into its most efficient mathematical formation. It is vaguely similar to the notion of "inner world" and "outer world" arrangements of the trigrams in ancient China, only here we see both arrangements displayed at once, suggesting a microcosm-macrocosm relationship between the Tree and the Tetractys. The ramifications of this are a little staggering, since the Tree of Life is already charting whole physical universe. What then, is the Tetractys adding to it?

In future pages, I will begin to explore how the relationship of binary to ternary hexagrammal structures may be our best guide to understanding this symbiotic relationship. I will only intimate at this point that the Tree of Life may be outlining "binary universe" where the Tetractys is outlining the ternary, just to give you some clue where this may be headed...
